Melaka is one of the most visited tourist states in Malaysia. The state of Melaka, aptly named Bandar Bersejarah (Historical City), is located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Straits of Melaka, sandwiched between the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. It is the second smallest state in Malaysia and covers an area of 1,658 square kilometres. The State of Melaka is divided into three districts, namely, Alor Gajah, Melaka Tengah and Jasin. The capital, also named Malaka, was for a brief period in the 13th to 14th century a great bustling trading point for traders from around the world. Today it is a remarkable city full of historical and cultural relics. The Melaka town centre is relatively small and easily accessible by foot, trishaw or bicycle.
The famous fort of Melaka and perhaps the most well known historical building next to the Stadthuys, it was built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress. It sustained severe structural damage during the Dutch Invasion, but timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1808 saved what remains of it today. You are free to wander around this 16th Century fort and let your imagination run riot to the days of pirates and Portuguese galleons.
Maritime Museum
Maritime Museum is constructed after 'Flora De La Mar', the Portuguese ship that sank off the Coast of Malacca on its way to Portugal. With its hull laden with invaluable treasures seized from Malacca, the ship was doomed from existence had it not for the efforts to Malacca's heritage. At the museum, visitor can get a closer look at Malacca from the famed Malay Sultanate of the 14th century to the Portuguese era, the Dutch era and the British era. There are exhibits of foreign ships that had once called at the port of Malacca during the height of its maritime hegemony.
The Stadthuys
Built in 1650 as the official residence of the Dutch Governor and his officers, The Stadthuys is a fine example of Dutch architecture of that period. It is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East.
An outstanding example of colonial Dutch architecture, this edifice now houses the History Museum and Ethnography Museum.
It took around 20 minutes to reach up on the hill. And it definitely made me sweat so much. But it did not make my brother who is so into photography to give up in taking our photos. Meanwhile for us, we never fail to put a smile on our face while our pictures are being captured.=)
This photo was taken right after I managed to reached on the hill. It was really a nice view from the hill and all the scenery around the Bandar Hilir Melaka mostly can be seen. For everyone's information, there are lots of souvenirs available for sale. Many kinds of souvenirs that can be purchased such as key chains, postcards, pictures and others. We had a marvelous time in the A Famosa! We are hoping that we'll have the chance to come back here again.
