Buddhist Maha Vihara

The Buddhist Maha Vihara was founded by the Sinhalese community based in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas in 1894 to provide a place of worship in their Sri Lankan Theravada tradition.

Most of the Sinhalese were either traders or artisans and skilled workers brought in from Ceylon by the British Administration to develop the colonial Malayan Civil Service.

The Buddhist Maha Vihara was commonly known as the Brickfields Buddhist Temple for many years.

The Buddhist Maha Vihara can attribute much of its physical development to the efforts of the Late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, whose vision was to provide the Malaysian Buddhist community with proper facilities to practice Buddhism.

The Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society, manages the administration, facilities and all activities at the Buddhist Maha Vihara. Many religious activities are jointly organised between the Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society and Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia, who also has its headquarters here. All religious activities of the Vihara are currently being conducted under the guidance of : Ven. K. Dhammaratana Thera, and assisted by :

* Ven. K. Vijitha Thera
* Ven. K. Dhammadinna

FULL MOON & NEW MOON DAY SERVICE

The different phases of the moon play an important part in Buddhist religious activities. On these days Buddhists gather at temples to take part in a simple ritual of offering flowers, candles, fruits, joss-sticks and sweets before the image of the Buddha before joining the monks in reciting the verses uttered by the enlightened One in unison.

This is usually followed by a sermon by a monk on some aspect of the sublime teachings. The services can be sponsored by a devotee for RM 10.00 either to invoke blessings on him or her self, the family or departed ones
To sponsor either a Full Moon or New Moon Puja for 2007 please contact the BMV Office at 603-22741141 or send us an email at info@buddhistmahavihara.com.

Wesak Day - the holiest of all Buddhist holy days - marks the birth, enlightenment and final passing away of the Buddha. The Buddha was born as Prince Siddharta Gautama on a full moon day in the month of Wesak (month of May in present day calendar) in 623 BC.

Siddharta began his search for enlightenment at age 29 and after six years realized the eternal truth, thus becoming the Buddha - which means the Awakened One. This auspicious event took place at dawn in the month of Wesak in 588 BC, which was also a full moon day. The Buddha taught the truth for 45 years until his final passing away into Nirvana on a full moon day in 543 BC. Thus, all the three major events in the Buddha's life happened on a full moon day in the month of Wesak. As such Buddhists of both the Theravada and Mahayana tradition throughout the world celebrate this thrice-blessed day.

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are situated thirteen kilometers (seven miles) north of the capital city Kuala Lumpur. They are the sacred place for the Hindu's in Malaysia. They consist of three main caves and a number of smaller ones. The caves are made of limestone and 400 meters long and 100 meter high. They were discovered in 1892. From your hotel in the Golden Triangle you can reach the Batu Caves easily by taxi or public bus (11 and 11d). The public busses can be boarded at the Pudu Raya Bus Terminal in Kuala Lumpur.

At your arrival you will be greeted by lots of monkeys. They are going for your peanuts and banana's, which you can buy in several shop, before you climb up to the caves. You have to climb 272 steps, which will lead you to the religious and magnificent Batu Caves.

Once a year they celebrate the Thaipusam festival in the Batu Caves. It's a celebration for the son of Shiva (Subramaniam) and the becoming "one" of Pusan and the Brihaspati stars.

The Thaipusam Festival
Every year, on Thaipusam, as many as 800,000 devotees and other visitors may throng the caves. As a form of penance or sacrifice, many of them carry kavadis (literally, "burden," such as a pitcher or jug). These are large, brightly decorated frameworks, usually combined with various metal hooks and skewers which are used to pierce the skin, cheeks and tongue.

By doing this penance they expect some favours from their Gods.
The festival is held in the tenth month of the Hindu calendar (mostly the end of January).

The procession starts on the evening before the Thaipusam festival at the Sri Mariamman Temple in the town centre of Kuala Lumpur.
By doing penance they want to extort some favours from the Gods.
The kavadis is placed on the shoulders of the devotee. The kavadis represents a miniature shrine.

Women carry a silver jug full of milk on their heads, some are pierced through their cheeks and tongues and others not.

Chains are dropped from the central body of the kavadis and hooked onto the flesh of the bearer. The length of the spears had to be limited to a metre in consideration for other devotees. Others hook limes, oranges or coconuts onto their bodies.

They are always accompanied by an entourage of relatives and friends to make them enthusiastic with dance parades, songs, musicians playing the drums and the flutes.
As they arrive at the shrine at the Batu Caves, the Swami removes the hooks, spears etc. The vow is finally fulfilled.

Thaipusam is celebrated at Peninsular of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and on Penang
The procession on Penang starts on the eve before the Thaipusam festival at the Chettiar Temple in Penang Street.

Every day there is a little celebration of a group of Hindus in the Batu Caves. Every time it's an imposing event, although there's no self torture.
Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave is he best known and biggest of the caves.
It's visited by many devotees.

The ceiling is 100 m above the ground and this huge chamber is lighted by daylight from several holes in the ceiling.
At the end of the caves you can see the bright sky, when you look above you.

If you go up the stairs, you can meet a lot of long tailed-macaque monkeys and if you have peanuts with you, they'll climb to you as I won't consider recommending. You might fall though.
You can take photos of them, carrying their babies for the peanuts. There are locals in the entrance, who will approach you to buy peanuts!

Long tailed-macaque monkeys:
they love peanuts, but they love crisps also !
Bus Nr 70 and 349 are leaving from Lebuh Pudu (in China Town) every 30 minutes. Journey is about 45 min! Open daily from 7 to 21h!

Comments:

My oponion towards this place is that is really amazing how a temple was built using natural site. although it is a beautiful place, a person who have a risk of getting heart attack should take extra caution when visiting this placebecause its reaquire a lots of energy to reach the top of the temple.

Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque

Fondly known as the 'Blue Mosque', the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, with the capacity to accommodate 24,000worshippers at any one time. It has the distinction of having the world's tallest minarets and biggest dome.

The three-level structure incorporates elements of Islamic and Malay architecture. The fully-carpeted and air-conditioned main prayer hall, one of the largest in the world, occupies two levels, with the upper gallery reserved for women worshippers. The second floor houses a gallery, while on the the ground floor are the administrative office, conference rooms, library, reception and lecture rooms.

Beautiful 51.2m-diameter blue and silver dome soars to a height of 106.7m above the ground -- the largest religious dome in the world. It has a special traditional design set off by a special rosette of Quranic verses, and its outer surface is clad with a vitreous enamel-baked triangular steel panel.

The mosque's carved timber mimbar (pulpit) is the creation of master craftsmen from Kelantan, who modelled it after those found in traditional mosques in the country.

The majestic dome is guarded by four minarets which rise 142.2m in the air, making them the world's tallest.

Inside the mosque, attention has been paid to fine detail via decorative khat (Arabic calligraphy) on the inner curve of the dome and on selected inner curve of the dome and parts of the walls in the main prayer hall. The calligraphy is the work of famous Egyptian calligrapher Shiekh Abdel Moneim Mohamed Ali El Sharkawi, who was assisted by local designers.

Intricately designed aluminium grills are another feature found on walls, doorways and windows. In the latter, they are complemented by stained glass that allows subdued light through. This is further accentuated by the high ceiling which is lined with triangular panels of red balau and ramin timber wood set in a criss-cross fashion. Pinball lights set in the ceiling are reminiscent of a starlit sky.

Suria KLCC

Suria KLCC is a Malaysia’s premier shopping destination located at Kuala Lumpur prestigious commercial address. It offers an array of goods and services to please and pamper the needs of shoppers; from fashion, entertainment, arts & culture to local delicacies and international gourmets. There are six levels of retail outlets with each level of a distinctive character and style.

This place is made famous since it was situated right beside the Petronas Twin Tower, the tallest twin buildings in the world. It has 88-storey and stand majestically at 452 meters above the sea level.

The main attraction of Suria KLCC is the Petrosains. This modern museum introduces an interactive way of learning science. This place is open to all the public since there are no limits for a person to acquire knowledge’s but of course there are entrance fees that needs to be paid in order for us to go enter it.

The other places that plays a big role in attracting people to come here is the Aquaria. Aquaria are an indoor aquarium, which contains thousands of fishes including sharks and stingray. One of the coolest thing that we can get here in Aquaria is we get to dive in the aquarium to feed the sharks and other fishes.

Suria KLCC mainly targets the tourist as their major customer and that is why there are many international retail outlets located here. Therefore, expect the prices of goods and services a little bit higher than other shopping malls. They even have a special toilet, which charge RM2 to enter it.

Beside the indoor attraction, Suria KLCC was also famous because of its 50-acre tropical landscape, which is the open park for the public. The park consists of a children’s playground, a symphony fountain, wading pool, jogging track, shelter and benches, patterned footpaths and sculptures.

Comment:

It was a great shopping experience, with everything imaginable under 1 roof. The smells that welcome you immediately upon entering the place is still in my memory. KLCC shoppng is the best shopping centre. I can find whatever I want there.

Sunway Pyramid

Sunway Pyramid is a distinctive retail landmark located in the heart of Petaling Jaya. It was opened in July 1997 as Malaysia’s first themed shopping and entertainment mall.

One of the mall’s most easily recognized design is the Egyptian-inspired Pyramid with a lion standing guard at the entrance. The rest of the building is established in the monumental style, complete with pseudo-hieroglyphics decorating facades, along with numerous Pharonic statuaries.

Sunway Pyramid is also one of the only shopping malls in Malaysia to have an indoor ice skating rink. The prices to enter the skating rink are ranged between RM13 to RM19 per entry. This fee is quite reasonable considering the cost of maintaining that is expensive and hard to sustain.

Besides ice-skating, we can also enjoy ourselves at the Pyramid Mega Lanes, a bowling alley that is the biggest in Malaysia. Like ice-skating, the bowling alley is also open to all the public without age limits. This is a good place for a family entertainment. They also organize a tournament, which opens to the public, and there are prizes to be given to the winners.

For all the bookworms out there, Sunway Pyramid offers two bookstores that will definitely meet your demand for all kind of books. These bookstores are MPH and Popular. The special thing about the Popular bookstore in this mall is that it is the latest and the biggest Popular in Malaysia so far.

For some people who really enjoy the lifestyle of the rich and famous, they can visit Starbucks. This is the place where most of the high class people meet up and have a chat while drinking coffee and the famous ice-blended.
From here also, we can have a nice view above the ground of the whole Sunway Lagoon, a theme park where you can have fun in the water as well on the ground. This theme park is located exactly besides the Sunway Pyramid mall. It is actually part of the attraction of the mall because it is under the same developer.

As we all know, a shopping mall will not be completed without a place to shops. The same goes to Sunway Pyramid where there are almost thousand of shops to visits. These shops include the clothing, food and beverages, and the latest gadgets that suits everyone needs. Therefore, to all anyone who are planning to visit Sunway Pyramid, be ready to expect an entertaining way of shopping.
